I'M PISSED OFF!!! (legal download rant)

soooooo...

...as a responsible member of society and a fellow music-maker myself i tried to do the responsible thing and PAY for downloading a couple of 80s funk tunes (bka as "boogie" to the uk heads) "peanut butter" by lenny white's funk group 'twennynine' and "wide receiver" by michael henderson. they aren't particularly deep songs, just things that if you haven't heard of them you: 1. aren't old enough to remember or 2. were listening to something else at the time.

both are available on amazon download BUT...
...if you are not IN the usa when purchasing, you can't download them. EVEN if you have accounts in the usa.

i went to cd baby cuz i know they are legit in terms of paying the artists but you have to buy the WHOLE FRICKING ALBUM -- not what i want, the other tunes SUCK ASS (even though i love both artists) and i'll be damned if i'm gonna pay $20 for the privilege of buying 18 songs i DON'T want in order to get ONE i do...

last time i checked the usa was only ONE country in the world of the internet and not even the only one with current laws concerning entertainment... amazon is a worldwide site (like i-tunes music store) but why can't you download from other places???

speaking of i-tunes store (blech, but like i said i wanted to "do the right thing") what's up with a TWO MINUTE version of a song that's at least 6 mins long (that would be "wide receiver"?) the other song ("peanut butter") that's at the right length is still available only at the crappy 128k bitrate--not worth my time/money.

this is why people steal music--they can get what they want.

btw, i'm still looking for both tunes in digital format...

Combustible Edison, Lounge, ULTRA Lounge and New, Good Lounge Bands...

I love Combustible Edison and wish they'd make another album.
crisp, classic, quality music.

Does anyone know of any similar, modern *good* lounge bands like this?

Also, the whole Ultra Lounge series is great.
Also Ursula 1000 is a nice twist...two parts goofy electronica, one part swingin retro lounge.
but I can't find anyone else that even runs along-side the C.E.
Any suggestions?

current retro song obsession

so yeah, every so often I get obsessed with an old track. I listen to a lot of older music for pleasure and also for sampling.

my current favorite song right now is "Fairchild" by Willie West. DAMN! so good. I didn't find a record, but it was on LB's bday gift to me (seriously, go get this - http://www.amazon.com/What-Funky-Soul-Grooves-1967-1977/dp/B000GIWS4W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1214035462&sr=8-1 ) now I am hunting down an LP comp that has the track so I can do a routine with it!

I couldn't find a site that plays it straight off the bat - you can listen to the chorus at amazon, but that is far from the song's most compelling moment.

I've only heard a song or two by this enigmatic musician who died of hepatitis or
committed suicide, both? depending on where you look and which source you read.

Has anyone else heard any of his wry spoken words over jazzy 40's music?

Amazing! I wish I could find more.

I can still remember walking into a 'Sound Warehouse' and
buying Run DMC's Raising Hell.

Ha, I was so young I was actually embarassed to say 'Hell' and had
to repeat myself to the girl twice.

Second, It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back, PE.
Back when they were good.

What crazy music for a white kid to be raised on!

Portishead and Siouxsie.
And both after a very long stretch of inactivity.

Portishead.
Personally I liked Beth Gibbons solo work w/ Rustin mann(sp?)
I see no reason to wait 10 years then release an album that pretty much
just takes up where you left off.

"On May 18, 2008, producer/instrumentalist Geoff Barrow expressed the band's enthusiasm for recording new material on their official website's blog, stating "cant wait to write some new tunes."[15]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portishead

Siouxsie:
Someone teach this bitch how to hold a note.
Seriously, her voice grates on my nerves.
It'd be better if she just spoke. Just talked into
the microphone as opposed to that hiccupy
too-cute shtick that no-one over 40 can do
without seeming a bt creepy.

Just my beligerant opinion.

Anyone else?

Well, god damn, you had ten years Geoffry!

Burning and buying and downloading and uploading
...it never ends!
I've got boxes!
BOXES!!!
of burned CDs I haven't even heard yet!

I download new copies because
I'm too lazy to dig through the unorganized
mounds of music that threaten to bury me in some
Collyer-esque mishap.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collyer_brothers#Langley_Collyer_found_dead)
I feel like a rat in hell...who needs 54 albums of Sun-Ra???
30 from Frank Zappa??
The *entire* Orbital repertoire?
10 CDs of Country and Western classics?
18 albums by Donovan?
I mean I like Donovan...occasionally iI actually
listen to his music...but where am I gonna find the time
to listen to 18 solid albums?

Please, don't turn me in to the FBI.

I spend over eight hours a day burning CDs.
My spine and eyes are slowly degrading into jelly.

I've gained 15 pounds in the last eight months and
am forgetting everyday words.

I wake up and the first thing I do is head for the Computer
to see how my downloads are going...the computer hasn't
been off for more than a half hour in many many months!

I'm busy day and night burning CDs so that, if the computer crashes,
I'll still have THE MUSIC...THE MUSIC...THE MUSIC!!!
Writing out the songs alone is arduous and painstaking...to much!
So I print out track listings for CDs...the ink is getting to be as expensive as the CDs and cases! But I can't stop! Seriously, I would have to phisically leave the house to
NOT be online either downloading or making a mixed CD or DATA cd or something!

The 'burner' has been making this funny noise lately and we had to
erase the entire hard drive a few weeks ago because of a virus.

Sometimes I can't wait until they outlaw p2p stuff altogether (ha!)
and I can move on with my life. but then I think about it becomeing
illegal and I start itching to get a few dozen more Gigabytes in before the doors shut forever!

Am I the only one?

anybody remember this?

It had such greats as:
People Like Us
The Jet Black Hair People
Negativland
I don't ven remeber what all else.
I've got it on tape back there somewhere.
GoodShtuff!
Unfortuneately I can find hide nor hair of it at the moment
..so you'll have to take my word that it was spooky kooky goodness.

Along these lines I just recieved a copy of
'Wide Open Spaces' from a friend in The Bay area.
Wobbly, Matmos, and People Like Us.
What a supergroup!

The product of which seems very um...'American'!
=cheesey, funny, Kountry, eclectic, weird and sweet.

Anyone else into 'mixed tapes' by well known musicians?
Some of them show (what I consider to be) good taste.
and some...well..not really.

I like the ones like Belle and Sebastians Late Night Tales
that has many great songs I've never even heard of.

Or Morrissey's Under The Influence.
That was interesting.
Who knew he liked Zydeco?
Etc.

WTF? Springsteen = NJ Bob Dylan? Etc.

(The "1972-1974" Part)

Who knew this?
Certainly not me.

And it makes me wonder.

What else am I missing out on?

Y'know I've often wondered about
the pattern of good artists or bands
that seem to sour or just bleach out into
stale shadows of their former bad-assed selves.

That's the negative view of it!

This Springsteen news made me think:
Maybe some (all?) of the bands that I think of
as irrelavent and boring...that have been around forever and ever...
really must've made fucking rad-ass debut albums that paid their way
and allowed them to hang around for thirty years afterwards
producing 'crap'.

Just a thought.

This kinda opens up new vistas for me.
What interesting stuff did these shit-bands do to afford still being mentioned?
John Melloncamp?

...*Bryan Adams*?

Wow.

i hear BEN HARPER is performing at the sunset junction festival! i used to get to go for free since we had friends that lived on the street the stage was on - but that has changed. i think its only like $14 to get in though. worth it for me since its basically drunk stumbling distance from my pad.

waiting for MICHAEL MCDONALD to start selling tix to the greek theater show 9/28.

Caribou - Andorra

Very excited about Andorra, the new album from Caribou (the artist formerly known as Manitoba): Released today.

""Melody Day" is a psychedelic winter's symphony, so far indie rock's best answer to Vivaldi. And I'm not one to flatter. Abstraction lives in "After Hours," which makes simple promises "I'll follow you until you wear me out" in the most majestic of musical contexts." - via http://theglorioushum.blogspot.com/2007/07/caribou-andorra.html

check it out!

Cymande - Bra (over and over... after hearing Grandmaster Flash cutting it up on CD and in 25th Hour this song has been playing constantly... but I'm hurting for the vinyl!!)

Pharaohe Monch - Internal Affairs (still waiting for that new album to drop, yo!! my friend Tom Politzer from Tower of Power plays on the single "Push")

Nas - Illmatic (this one has the kind of staying power that, well, I'd be hard pressed to find in an album in ANY genre)

The DJs behind "Flip the Switch" and the "Believe EP" see the remix album as a natural part of the evolution of UK dance music. In a recent interview, Ed was quoted as saying "We used to make cut-ups or DJ mixes for ourselves to play. Bootleg culture isn't a new thing. It's something people do - take snatches from other people's records and make a DJ mix."

after the hype of LAMB i totally missed the fact that Gwen Stefani has a new album out.

anyone heard it? i tried listening to the little snatches of it that amazon gives you last night, but that never does a damn thing for me. i couldn't get a good read on it.

also, nelly furtado. yeah, i know she has a new album. yeah, i know it's being hyped through the roof because of timbaland. but somehow i can't quite get into it. i bought her first album way back when, listened to it maybe once, then never picked it up again. anyone got any compelling opinions about this new one?

Hi..I mostly lurk in here, but I do enjoy reading about artists and music you all appreciate and support. Would it be OK to post a link to a myspace site where my new band has some tunes up? We have an album due out in June (with an actual label supporting it) and are playing a couple of shows at the SXSW music conference this week. I'd be curious to know what you folks would think.

i guess it was popular on you tube. im in love with this cover. ABSOLUTELY in love - its an acoustic hippie sounding version of "hey ya" by outkast.

after further investigating the band - they are a christian rock group (HA!) and play some decent "jams" but they all start to sound exactly the same.

So, is the new album coming out later this year? At all? Does it even exist?

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/40977/Bjork_Release_Date_Disappears_Album_Title_Reveale
According to Björk's website the new album was to be released on 07.05.07 (no title) and now it says "XX.0X.07". Seems that "Totempole" is the name of the album.

I came across this link first in Amazon which prompted me to investigate a little bit. That's where I found the link above. Check it out the release date. January 1, 2020!!!???
http://www.amazon.com/Totempole-Bjork/dp/B0002CHOV4/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-1961878-1267231?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1172967595&sr=1-2
Typo? Joke? Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing anything she touches.

Since most of my music these days is gleaned by the single of the interwebs, here is a current favourite anthem I recommend everyone get a listen to if they can...

Psychostick - Beer!

I like beer 'cuz it is good
I drink beer because I should
if there was a song to sing
I sing it and beer you bring
I drink beer when I am sad
'cuz the beer it makes me glad
now there's nothing left to say
so lets go drink beer

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
... and Stuff

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
let's go drink some BEER

BEER

when its warm it taste's real crappy
but cold beer will make me happy
when I throw up on the floor
I can go and drink some more
they say beer will make me dumb
it are go good with pizza
now that we have drunk some beer
lets go drive a car

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
....and stuff

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
let's go drink some BEER

Beer

uh dude.. I think you've had enough
...No

lets go drink some beer.

I am drunk, drunk as me, I am drunk, wheee
I am drunk, drunk as me, I am drunk wheee
i am drunk, drunk as me, I am...

a friend of mine is in a bind and needs a dj for friday night. here are the details - lemme know if you're interested!:

friday night -- it's a birthday party in the mission (two apartments, next door to each other, in the same building). we've got $150 for the dj, plus drinks (for her/him and a plus one) and whatever tips we can get from the crew throughout the night. we need two hours of 80's from about 9 to 11 and then if the dj want's to mix it up after, that'd be great.

so there is rock-station radio going on at work all the time and I block most of it out unless you get a rare play of a Prince song or Rick James or "Shotgun" by Jr. Walker & the Allstars or something or once in a great while something like "Praise You" that actually has beats. anyway tho, once in a while something catches my ear that's new and mainstream ("Crazy" was the last one)

so anyway the song they are playing to death is "Is It Any Wonder?" by Keane and I totally dig it - I DL'd the album and didn't like pretty much anything else on the album, it was a genre I don't generally like.

so I told my GF I like that song (before I DL'd the album outta curiousity) and she looked at me like I had expressed a secret love for New Kids On The Block. I'm so far removed from what is happening in rock music right now, she's like 7 years younger than me and I feel like the old dude who picked the total lamest band to say I liked a song from.

anyway I like that song. probably cuz it's endlessly repetitive and hammers the hook to death like that disco shit I usually listen to.

This song was the last song that played on the 2nd episode of "Jericho" on CBS.
Aired Sept. 27th.

Someone uploaded the scene below, so you'll hear dialogue with the music below. It take a bit to download. About halfway in, you'll really hear more of the song.

some song has been swimming around in my brain for about a month now and i can't figure out what it is.

i thought it was "carrie"...because i could have sworn it was in an episode of sex and the city. but maybe not. it's not "carrie ann", which is an old song. this is 80s. but i don't think it's a hair band. possibly 90s. big chorus though. definitely male vocals, about a girl, with her name as the chorus. not "amanda" or "aimee".

making.
After-Hours:

To begin your Space Voyage, arrive at the usual shuttle pick-up location:
Central Ave and E. 1st St Los Angeles, CA 90012
There are several parking lots on this corner.
You can park for free at the Japanese Village parking structure.
Or, if you prefer, you can pay $4 and park in the lot across the street.
There is ample street parking in this area as well. This is a well-lit, safe area.
There is also parking near the Office Depot, which is a ½ block away.
Jump on the shuttle, where Central and 1st Street meet.
Shuttles will be running 11pm till 6am.

However, to complete this rather extravagant mission, massive amounts of propane are required.
Space Island is looking for your support [financially] in terms of acquiring propane for this event.

***Our Needs***

(4) 60 gallon propane tanks (that's 4 full tanks). Damn... that is a lot of FIRE ...
but as we all know all Space Pirates and Vikings need fire ...

Any amount of funds that you generously wish to contribute will help and be greatly appreciated!
Your donations for SI's Propane Relief Fund can be sent to Pay Pal at paypal.com care of raphael_vasquez@hotmail.com

Cost: $20 at the door

Arrr!!!!! And thanks
Space Island

SI @at LA's Decom 2006 & After-Hours is presented to you by:

Tell me about the stuff you like that almost no one has ever heard of.

Right now, off the top of of my head, I get:

Chrome
(old school, proto-80s, science fiction lowbrow super-guitars, totally inspired some other band you like)

King Kong Ding Dong
(trippy abstract grungey modern raw philadelphia)

the Sensuous Black Set
(if you know, you know; if you don't, there's absolutely nothing I can say)

the Normal
(most-covered / least-known, electronic before electronica)

the Silver Apples
(electronic before there was electricity)

the Monks
("while the Beatles were singing 'I wanna hold yer hand' we were around the corner singing 'I'll smash your head')

Cranberry Man
(I've got $1.75. I've got $1.75. I only needed a dollar twenty. What am I going to do with all this extra money?)

Test Department
(the album Beating the Retreat is something I've been looking for *forever* without luck. if you can lay it on me - let's talk.)

shit; speaking of I-can't-find-it:

SLEEP CHAMBER
(if you can hook me up with a copy of Sin Ov Obsession I'll *never* say an unkind word to / about you *ever again*. Anything else Sleep Chamber related, in fact. All I have is what was released to CD and frankly it all sucks. Give me the old stuff - the raw stuff. Need-eed-eed it.)

Natalie Walker's "Quicksand" remixed by Thievery Corporation. I can't get it out of my head. It's so soothing and melodic. You can hear her entire album on her proper website. My co-hort working with me describes her music as "drinking a nice glass of wine."
www.myspace.com/nataliewalkermusic

And, if you haven't heard Ray LaMontagne's cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy", I think you're missing out. It's unusally good. Leave it to Ray to do something like that to a really awesome dance song. Who would have thought that song would translate so nicely to just a solo acoustic guitar and voice? "Crazy" is completely transformed in a way you'd never have imagined. Okay, I wouldn't have.
Direct link to download the song that is also contained in the article above.

have you ever heard a song that you normally hated but because a song you loved was before it, you got roped in?

example:
i love michael mcdonald, i had the fine pleasure of hearing "i keep forgetting" on the way to work this morning on some random station. the song after it was "just another day" by jon secada - i was convinced it was the best song i ever heard.

Just saw them last night!! Its was an awesome show.

For some damned reason, I've heard "Crazy" close to 5 billion times already, and oddly I am not sick of it....

These mofos put on a damned fine show! Cee Lo got some voice, I'll tell you what. I was dancing my skinny ass off all night.

I was expecting more elaborate costumes, but I guess "Trapper John and the M.D.'s" was cool enough.

..They did a slow version of "Transformer" that was super sick.

Anyone noticing the various crossovers of bluegrass/folk music into "mainstream" music? Yonder Mountain String Band, Nickel Creek, Neko Case, Hothouse Flowers among others. Surely these things come & go as has been done before (e.g., country). But bluegrass/folk was one I didn't think I would see.

Any other notables?

to The Mendoza Line. i am hopelessly addicted to the song "Throw It In The Fire" - it's sort of alt-country-indescribable. think dressy bessy meets mazzy star meets rilo kiley. they are fronted by a husband-wife duo who are hilarious live, as she berates him about their lack of a baby and he plays the reluctant husband. i know it doesn't sound funny, but it was. plus, she is very feminine, and surrounded by a band of scruffy men, which is great. they were in sneakers and she was in stiletto heels. i didn't expect to just completely fall in love with their music, but i did. well worth it if you can catch them live.

you can click and play here without having to download:
but there are more songs available for download here (check out the critical acclaim, i'm not the only one who loves em):

I've heard a little bit of them & I'm intrigued. They remind me a little of all that great Brit-pop from the 90's. Anybody into them? What album should I start with? Or, if I can only get one for the time being, which one should it be?

~Thanks~

the indescribable addictiveness of Jolie Holland

her music is haunting, like a siren's song to me...little curling vines of song reaching out and wrapping in my hair and through my ears. her voice is a little bit like Billie Holiday if Billie sang Depression-era Gothic blues jazz alt-country. i had absolutely no idea how to describe her music more than that until i read this summary on her website that captured it better than i ever could:

Holland’s sepia-toned song noir and billowy voice are in rare form as she weaves ethereal tales at a crossroads where haunting meets joyful—hers is a voice from the heavens singing stories of the underworld. The songs rise and fall like heavy eyelids and convey the peace of a place between asleep and awake. Sounds from past and present-tense waltz together to a never-ending melody that flickers between folk, jazz, blues and pop as Holland’s characters and situations play on surrealistic celluloid.

Prince- Guitar Hero

Ok, so there was an article in the Chrin today about youtube.com and how it is unearthing some lost video gems, and this is the one they highlight as a shining example.
I am HUGE George Harrison fan, and this is the jam-session performance of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' from the R&R hall of fame induction ceremony in 2001, shortly after Harrison's death.

It's a strong bunch of his friends, with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Mark Knopfler playing along with George's son, Dhani (who looks so much like a younger version of his father it's almost frightening).

The kicker, though, is Prince.
About 3 1/2 minutes in, it's his show. This goes on my list as some of the best guitar soloing EVER. Damn, he is the man. I knew he was good, and that he plays just about any instrument you can name, and well, but geeze....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU9qKCBeMvI&search=prince%20rock%20n%20roll%20hall%20of%20f

I think I need to go put on 'All Things Must Pass' and '1999' on shuffle play now.
