Cymande - Bra (over and over... after hearing Grandmaster Flash cutting it up on CD and in 25th Hour this song has been playing constantly... but I'm hurting for the vinyl!!)

Pharaohe Monch - Internal Affairs (still waiting for that new album to drop, yo!! my friend Tom Politzer from Tower of Power plays on the single "Push")

Nas - Illmatic (this one has the kind of staying power that, well, I'd be hard pressed to find in an album in ANY genre)

  • Raquy and the Cavemen, like *right* now. "Caravan" off of "Jordan". Great one. Love them.

Still have my bloodless grip on oldtimey morbidity / perversions like SWANS and Sleep Chamber. I get in a mood, and it's all I can accept.

Lotta 80s stuff. I'm old. Siouxsie, Dali's Car, Tones on Tail, Cell, Specimen, early Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death (Rozz), Crucifux, Joy Division, Virgin Prunes, Chrome, Diamanda G., Einsturzende Neubauten, and so on.

Lotta older-still stuff: Brian Eno (playing a lot of his tunes on the keys, too), 'Floyd, Henry Cow*, Marty Robbins (the cowboy gangsta rapper of his day), maybe some Sabbath. Esquivel. Syd Barrett. Nick Drake. Silver Apples. the Monks.

Even older: Billie Holiday, Leadbelly, Dorothea Trowbridge, Sister Clara Hudmon, Charles Barnett, Thibodeaux Boys, Bessie Jones and Group, and the fucking *incomparable* Dave Ray, for instance.

Further back and faster: Erik Satie. The score from "Sweeney Todd". Stravinsky. Mussorgsky. Peer Gynt - in fact anything at all by Grieg.

Stuff you couldn't (or very probably) don't know about but maybe ought to:
    ~ Diana Obscura
~ Clan of the Bleeding Eye
    ~ the Chains
~ 1ManBanjo (if it's your thing - 1/2 my friends lovelove it, the other 1/2 hatehate it (sorry 1MB - gotta be true, you know I love you))
    ~ Pucca Pangenitor
    ~ Nommo Oggo
    ~ Amorphous Ossiferous
    ~ the Helvetica Hotline - www.helveticahotline.com
    ~ Divided Like a Saint's
    ~ Mercury Ghost
~ Corpus Callosum (SE; I understand there's a younger outfit using the name in the west - I have it on good authority the original CC is cool w/it and won't get weird about it (makes sense I guess))
    ~ ahem Loki Freign

From the cold parts of USA / stuff you probably haven't heard of:

    ~ King Kong Ding Dong
    ~ Algebra of Need
    ~ Drums Like Machine Guns
    ~ Syzslak
    ~ Bad News Bats
    ~ Thinking Machines

From elsewhere altogether (five stars only):

    ~ Musafir
    ~ Mercan Dede
    ~ Ali Hassan Kuban
    ~ Fifi
~ Den Fule (my rig makes a mess of umlauts on tribe.net for some reason; put an umlaut over the "u")
~ Hossam Shaker (GENIUS GENIUS GENIUS) (his orch's version of Lama Bada Yata Sama is THE version, for me)
    ~ Mogador
    ~ The Pura Paku Alaman
~ ZEKI fucking MUREN - hah! Love him or hate him. *I* love him. I *love* him. I love *him*. I don't care what your take on him is; if you're over and he comes on - I'm ignoring you and dancing around like a retarded fag for minimum of 5 minutes. Deal.
~ Kim Sohee (brilliant pansori, like a folkloric korean "diva")
~ Olov Johanssen (audio demerol of the stringsy-variety)
~ her grace, Oum Kalthoum (invented what a "diva" is today, ruled Egypt by singing)
~ Ugur - this shit just rocks. It's my contention that, no matter what music you prefer, you will love this ensemble. For one thing, if their neighbors found out they were recording the stuff they're doing, they'd stand a better than even chance of getting stoned to death and not at all in the good way. Music that people risk their lives to make is not a genre we have in full effect, over here, ey
~ Natacha Atlas (let me be clear, 1/3 of what she does sends me straight out and belongs in the 5star cat, the rest I'd quickly flush and pretend it didn't happen, try "Adam" and see what you think)
~ Vadya Lahari - (good luck, and let me know if you find it)

Stuff happening right now you may well have heard of that I am listening to:
    ~ Strapping Young Lad
    ~ Children of Bodom
    ~ Cocorosie
~ Anja Lechner And Vassilis Tsabropoulos
~ look: screw you, OK? She's hailing from my birthplace, she's cute as three buttons in a row, she looks like my cousins, and she's a lyricist that plays a harp. So lovely and talented, young Ms Joanna Newsome is HEY HEY HEY QUIT THROWING THINGS AT ME
~ what's that other thing? I totally can't remember. Accordion, three vocalists, trippy, snide and ssarcastic but philosophical and not annoying at all.... huh. Lost it. Fortunately this post is plenty long enough, right? Plus I have several bruised ribs, all the sudden. I still feel Ms Newsome is OW OW OW OW STOP IT

*(not many people realize this but HC was *actually* a satanist band - like, for real; the hippies that listen to them would probably defecate all over their berks if they realized what the lyrics are saying - "It ain't abstractions, Moonshadow, they ain't foolin' or bein' poetic: they're talking about THE DEVILLE and how pretty and sad he is...")
    • love the info about the cow (that is quite funny.)

what's up w/the "world" music you don't write anything about? izzit stuff you think we should know, or just that you don't want a post that's 3 pages long?

my gf is a HUGE fan of natacha. she can damn near do no wrong in my gf's eyes, i'm just sick of hearing (from my gf) how great she is--but i do like a lot of it. of course, that's what i get for having a middle-eastern percussionist/bellydancer for a gf.
      • >>love the info about the cow<<

I totally thought it was typical bored flotsam until this guy Chris W. showed me a picture of them hanging out with Greywolf. Then I looked back over the tracklist and my eyebrow did go up: Morningstar, eh? Heart of the Beast? Lovers of Gold? UhhhhHUH. HOT. As it were. Then there's the deeper connection of Learning, itself, with Baphomet, maybe a stretch, but that's the sort of deep mysterious crap musicians get into, I know... then I read an interview with Ms. Krause in this book about "black metal" (norwegian, not ) in which she goes on and on about the "real" Lucifer, and I'm all like, BABY!!! You're so crazy! You little devil-tramp~! So sexy.

        >>what's up w/the "world" music you don't write anything about? izzit stuff you think we should know, or just that you don't want a post that's 3 pages long?<<

It was getting long, but that was just lax on my part - I'm right about to remedy that (mainly because I'm thrilled you're interested!)

        >>my gf is a HUGE fan of natacha.<<

It was my wife that turned me on to her (read: forced me to play her whenever she was in my office, for, like, two years - "play that one Natacha song"; "you know, she's Hossam Shaker's neice, right?" (yeeeessss baby I know), but of course:

        >>that's what i get for having a middle-eastern percussionist/bellydancer for a gf.<<

....it all comes out in the wash. We sacrifice, and we are rewarded. ^5. "Honey do you mind if the girls come over tonight for practice?" ".........uhhhhhof course not?" "Oh honey, you're so good to me, thank you so much, we won't bother you..."

"........oh I know you won't, mm mm mm mmmmm"
(whistle dee dee gee I hate it when nine rock-hard exotic broads in hip scarves and bras made of coins dance around in my house for three hours, gettin' all rosy and worked up. Yessir, that's a burden on me. But I manage.)

From elsewhere altogether (five stars only):

~ Mercan Dede - electric amazingness

~ Ali Hassan Kuban - From Nouba to Kairo - drums and horns, freaky ass-shaking is not optional

~ Fifi - Egyptian group immortalizing the trad greats by rocking them out as if on too much cocaine

~ Den Fule - ensemble craziness a la Iceland

~ Mogador - the turkish traditional equivalent of HARDCORE!! Makes my heart beat too fast.

~ The Pura Paku Alaman - Javanese gamelan, imo, this orchestra is at the very pinnacle of excellence in that field of music.

~ ZEKI fucking MUREN - this dude is just out of control: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeki_M%C3%BCren

~ Ugur - hard to put: very experimental but redolent with traditional eastern themes. Highly spirited but moody as well. Lots of traditional instruments - and also some electronic innovation on (very) old equipment.

~ Vadya Lahari - karnatic / south indian ensemble: violin, mrdangm, 2 drummers
        • i know nothing about black metal--ok maybe <snaps fingers> that much more than joe sixpack, but that still amounts to little. i guess the fun part for me is just that a lot of people who are into the cow prolly have NO IDEA where they're "really" coming from. i used to have a mgr (in a record store) who was into them--i think he'd sh... *soil* his pants if he knew. then again, he might find it funny too.

          <(mainly because I'm thrilled you're interested!) >

while many people in my position think of it as "sample fodder" i actually enjoy some of the stuff on its own (i think saul's in that club too.)

<I hate it when nine rock-hard exotic broads in hip scarves and bras made of coins dance around in my house for three hours, gettin' all rosy and worked up. Yessir, that's a burden on me. But I manage.>

yup, i feel your pain. my gf teaches the stuff. only a few of her students could be considered "rock hard" although exotic definitely works (she lives near barcelona.) occassionally they ask me in for my opinion of a routine (they dance in the front room.) it's always funny having to go and hide in the bedroom while they change (my gf's place is small.)

just lit some green-tea incense. a buyer is coming over to look at some records (good timing saul) and i can't have it smelling "funkier than a mosquito's tweeter." damn, the smell reminds me of my gf. well... i'll have my ticket soon and be on my way to share the rest of my life with her soon... :)
          • >>while many people in my position think of it as "sample fodder" i actually enjoy some of the stuff on its own (i think saul's in that club too.)

hell yeah, if you don't learn to love the originals you ain't diggin' right! you discover these lost classics that are dop all on their own.

            >>i can't have it smelling "funkier than a mosquito's tweeter."

speaking of THAT, do you got that Nina Simone on wax?
            • i have it on a comp.
gotta see if i'm willing to part w/that one yet...

"get up & dance" is on that same comp and it's always fun to play as an intro to "groove is in the heart"--there's a reason i always preferred rob to the other guys!
              • btw, ike & tina do a version of "...tweeter" too--THAT is for sale. don't remember what i thought of it (it's on "working together.")
                • well if you decide to part with it, lemme know. I love that track, it's like good lovemakin'... build up tension, cool down, repeat, tease a little like that release is coming... finally it explodes into fullblown funkiness!

the Turners' version, if I've heard it I can't remember what I thought of it.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalways talkin' bout the SAME OLD GAME!
                    • i was trying to get the new white stripes on itunes. just the single is available. but i stumbled upon a fancy thing that itunes offers which i never really thought about. itunes exclusive concerts. nice. i got an iron & wine one and a joshua radin one. i got the joshua radin one because i like the few songs i have heard on soundtracks, but didn't know which album to get. so i went for the concert which had a mix of what looked to be all his tunes.

im getting bjork tomorrow once i get paid. i only could afford the $4.99 treats.

                        that concerts idea is interesting.
here's the problem i have with using a live version to decide about buying the record:

earth wind & fire were (are?) an AMAZING group. they had an album called "gratitude" half of which is live. many of the songs i love by them are from the live portion of this album. going back and hearing the "studio version" after the live track is anti-climactic (the live versions are so vibrant and full of life!) i often find this to be the case with bands/artists (unless they suck live.) i kinda wish that what happened in the music industry is that people played live FIRST then recorded the album after "living" with the tune for a while. chick corea did this once, but the idea hasn't gotten much traction, unfortunately.

...and in case you were wondering, i usually see a movie before reading the book (if i haven't already read it.) that way i'm generally less disappointed w/the movie (unless it just sucks, period.)

revisiting Songs In The Key Of Life at the moment...

picked up a repress as well as the original pressing that I already had, I might pick up ANOTHER one from work because I want to juggle "I Wish" and I don't want to fuck up the pristine copy... god, this job is gonna make me broke.
