Artist's Mixed tapes...

topic posted Mon, May 19, 2008 - 9:50 AM by  Ben
Anyone else into 'mixed tapes' by well known musicians?
Some of them show (what I consider to be) good taste.
and some...well..not really.

I like the ones like Belle and Sebastians Late Night Tales
that has many great songs I've never even heard of.

Or Morrissey's Under The Influence.
That was interesting.
Who knew he liked Zydeco?

Etc.

wow, only four songs for each
      bandmember?
Kinda hard to imagine that this was
      an honest representation of
      their tastes.

i'm sure there's some crossover in their tastes, but ultimately i think that's secondary--it's a great compilation.

"The songs selected by the Rolling Stones for their Artist's Choice CD include 16 tracks that have inspired each of the four members of the band throughout their career. The tracks span a variety of genres and artists, including James Brown (selected by Jagger), Muddy Waters (Richards), Aretha Franklin (Wood) and Little Richard (Watts)."

I haven't been able to find a track listing ...several of the links on the link you posted didn't work for my computer. Care to post a track listing?

Check out this Belle and Sebastian one:

"Gratuitous Theft in the Rain" - Rehash
"How Long Blues" - Jimmy and Mama Yancey
          "Here's What's Left" - RJD2
          "Questions" - Lootpack
"O My Friends You've Been Untrue to Me" - Demis Roussos
          "French Disko" - Stereolab
"On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" - The Peddlers
"Cissy Strut" - Butch Cassidy Sound System
"Ring of Fire" - Johnny Cash
          "Free Man" - The Ethiopians
"Do You Really Want to Rescue Me" - Elsie Mae
"It's an Uphill Climb (To the Bottom)" - Walter Jackson
"I'm In Your Hands" - Mary Love
          "Coś Specjalnego" - Novi Singers
"Lost in the Paradise" - Gal Costa
"People Make the World Go Round (Kenny Dixon Jr. Remix)" - Innerzone Orchestra
          "Uhuru" - Ramsey Lewis
"Fly Like an Eagle" - Steve Miller Band
          "Get Thy Bearings" - Donovan
"Green Grass of Tunnel" - múm
"Casaco Marron" - Belle & Sebastian
"Taireva" - Zimbabwe Shona Mbira Music
"Let Your Conscience Be Your Guidance" - Space Jam
"Watch the Sunrise" - Big Star
"Badinerie from Bach's Orchestral Suite No.2 in B Minor" - Boston Baroque
"When I Was a Little Girl" - read by David Shrigley

Now THAT is a variety of genres and artists!
3/4 of whom I've never even heard of before.
Only a few too well worn to warrant inclusion IMO
          Fly like an Eagle??
          Ring of Fire??
Steve and Johnny have heaps of
other good songs to choose from
why trot these weathered war horses out?

<why trot these weathered war horses out?>

for the same reason that people want to hear "satin doll" and "girl from ipanema" after all of these years and many awful covers--they're great songs. frankly, *i* don't need to hear those songs anymore, but it doesn't mean that they suck, just that i am tired of them.

try this for a tracklisting: www.nzentgraf.de/books/13042003.jpg

i can't find anything with text i can copy & paste--i also don't feel like typing out a tracklist, i've been correcting a document for the last few days and typing any more than i have to is not in the cards now.

i'm glad you like the belle & sebastian, but "eclecticism" isn't required in my definition of great compilations. when i *personally* make compilations (or do radio shows) they tend to be all over the map, but i don't expect that of everyone.

              It's not my definition either.
It's the description of the collection
by the post you linked to.

"The tracks *span a variety of genres* and artists, including James Brown (selected by Jagger), Muddy Waters (Richards), Aretha Franklin (Wood) and Little Richard (Watts)."

well, i don't have to agree with the description that *starbucks*, er, hear music has--it's all blues/r&b to me, frankly. i think that part of the reason they do that is that "eclectic" is a buzzword with their target market (yuppies.)

                (warning, slight rant follows)

it really bugs me how it's "the thing" to say "i listen to everything." anyone who says that has to prove it to me before they get the "liar" sticker taken off their forehead--i'm a music freak and i don't listen to "everything." it's ok to listen to one or two styles as long as you're *open* to other types of music--or at least honest about being close-minded.

                (tangent)

it's like people who place so much emphasis on "innovation" -- some people aren't innovators, they just are GREAT at what they do. i'd rather hear *good* music than *innovative* music (if i have to pick one quality.)

                </rant>

getting back to belle & sebastian, the "late night tales" is a series i've known about for years (it followed the "back to mine" series which i actually liked more.) i really liked the idea of "this is what we would play if you came back to our place after a night out."

Guess it depends on what "*good*" means to you.
Do you mean good like in tune?
Good form? like sticking to the
                  format? Good harmonies and beats?
                  Good structure?

Good and inovative aren't mutually exclusive to me.
Seems a bit like saying: I'd pick color over orange anyday.
'Good music', I would think, requires at least *some* innovation but
innovative music can be utterly horrific to listen to.

                  See many 'noise bands'

                  "Levels of Innovation" etc etc
This topic is ripe with possible tangents.

I actually have a similar but different gripe...
                  when someone dismisses your opinion
                  because you like a band
but aren't neck deep into them.

                  "I really like Penis Envy."
"I bet you haven't even heard (names some obscure album by Crass)!"
                  "er..no."
Hauty silence meant to speak volumes.

                  "Re: Artist's Mixed tapes..."
I just like being introduced to new music by
people who, presumably, have been lending a
descriminating ear to it for some time.

that is lame. I like this approach much better:

                    person 1: "I like album A by X!"
person 2: "have you heard album B by X?"
                    person 1: "erm, no"
person 2: "oh, it's fucking great! here, lemme play it for you - and if you like album A, you'll probably love album C by band Y. it TOTALLY influenced that record."
person 1: "thanks for turning me on to music that I will probably dig and for not being an asshole about it"

                      saul,

that is why i want to shop at any store you work at.

                      ben,

we agree 'good' and 'innovative' are not mutually exclusive, however, i don't think that they are necessarily related either.

70s aerosmith for instance: were they really that innovative? i think they were just a more (musically) technically advanced version of the rolling stones (who WERE innovative.) that said, i TOTALLY love aerosmith in the 70s, it's great music.

about the mixtapes: i love being turned onto great music by ANYONE. pros, experts, even rank newbs. i find that sometimes i like getting stuff from newbs more because i can do the "education thing" that saul alluded to (i love sharing music with people.)
i do have to give you this point though, ben, when you have to BUY a mix it's usually better to go with someone you already trust.

I had a big disagreement on what makes music good with my ex the other day. she listens to idm-ish dance music, and stuff where the beat is really weak... my skin was crawling riding in her car while she was playing 2 step with perhaps the lightest beat ever... badly compressed, no thud, nuthin. anyway, we were discussing what we thought made music good. in my opinion, the rhythm has to be tight and it has to convey a sense of motion - if the drums are locked, well for me the rest is just window dressing. the most brilliant piece of music, for me, is something that takes a few elements and blends them together so perfectly that even if the actual musical figures are dirt simple, it just sounds GOOD, like a well oiled machine. I mostly listen to funk and soul when I'm listening to pre-machine music, and I brought that up as an example... The Payback to take one notable track I figured she'd know. the thing repeats itself over and over for 7 and a half minutes or something, only occasionally doing anything different - but the groove is so good it could go on forever and I'd be happy. anyway, that doesn't do anything for her. for her, there need to be a ton of different elements, a bunch of programming, some neat synthesizer trick, etc. if it's been done before it's boring. I really don't think so. a group like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, they're doing something that's been done to death - but they nail it exactly, and it's great. is there anything inherently wrong with that because it's not innovative? if something sounds good and is innovative as well, I always dig that - but it needs to sound good first, innovative second, IMO. music that is purely innovative is sometimes quite interesting, but it's often more suited to analyzing and deconstructing than enjoying on a visceral level, I find. often, groups that try too hard to be innovative sacrifice the quality of the musical experience for the listener, other than those who appreciate music on a purely intellectual level. the really great innovation comes naturally as an extension of your ideas. if one stumbles upon something cool, I think "woah! that sounds neat, let's do that!" is better than "we're going to impress everyone with how clever we are"
