I can still remember walking into a 'Sound Warehouse' and
buying Run DMC's Raising Hell.
Ha, I was so young I was actually embarassed to say 'Hell' and had
to repeat myself to the girl twice.
Second, It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back, PE.
Back when they were good.
What crazy music for a white kid to be raised on!

Re: First Album bought?
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 2:23 PMI always loved all the cutting on Peter Piper.
I remember being embarrassed to ask for Butthole Surfers records when I was 10 or something.
the first album I can remember buying was Radio by LL Cool J. Rock the bells!
I was a funny mixed race kid, I had posters from Word Up magazine on my walls. my parents would never buy me the tracksuit and bucket kangol outfits I wanted. then I started sneakily buying Slayer tapes when my mom wasn't paying attention. Reign in Blood! what I would do is buy a cassette I really wanted and then with whatever was left buy a generic cassette single (remember those?) and say that was what I bought.

Re: First Album bought?
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 4:59 PMFirst albums I ever bought myself were purchased with my birthday money at Licorice Pizza, in the mall. I bought The B-52's self-titled album, and Adam Ant's "Friend or Foe".

Re: First Album bought?
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 8:30 PMHmmm....I remember joining the Columbia House buy 11 tapes for 1 penny club back in the day. I don't remember every tape, but here's what I do remember: Van Halen - 1984, Nina - 99 Red Luftballons album, Genesis - Genesis & Bon Jovi - Bon Jovi
My first two CDs that I bought: I got them at The Warehouse and it was Rush - Hold Your Fire & Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy. -

Re: First Album bought?
Thu, June 5, 2008 - 2:39 AMdamn, i'm feeling really old. my first record was some time in the 70s. i had some stuff when i was a *little* kid, but i didn't become the serious music junkie till jr. high. big groups at the time were: zep (of course, but they didn't really have anything current out,) foreigner and some new turks from l.a.--van halen and some group called "toto." i was hearing soul/funk and all the "black" stuff, but the music that was truly "mine" was the white rock stuff (hendrix had a weird reception in black circles.)
cds? man, i was HATING on those when they came out. i finally got some before i got a player though--pat metheny's new one (letter from home--guess nick holder liked that one too...) and a few others that i've forgotten. -

Re: First Album bought?

Re: First Album bought?
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 10:36 PMmosaic, did you ever check out their first album? i almost prefer when bands don't completely know who they are yet. toto had this funny thing where half of the album would be rock and the other half would be soul/r&b. makes sense that they wound up being quincy jones' main session guys ("thriller" is played mostly the guitarist, 2 keyboardists and drummer from toto.) -

Re: First Album bought?
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 2:13 PMnow THAT I wouldn't have guessed! (reading the liner notes to thriler now) -

Re: First Album bought?
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 2:16 PMit looks like most of the tracks I really like on that LP had the rhythm section consisting of Louis Johnson and Ndugu Chancler. I didn't realize Human Nature was written by one of the guys in Toto. -

Mon, June 9, 2008 - 6:27 AMHuman Nature 's a good f'n song, too!

Re: First Album bought?
Mon, June 9, 2008 - 7:00 PMinteresting. i think those guys (ndugu & bruh johnson) play a LOT more on "off the wall" (i prefer that album to thriller.) didn't realize they were still "in the mix" for thriller.

Re: First Album bought?
Thu, June 5, 2008 - 7:51 AMFirst, second, and third all purchased simultaneously:
• Only Theatre of Pain - Christian Death
• Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - some English group or other
• Punk's Not Dead - The Exploited
my 4th album purchase was Spring Session M. Bonus points if you squeal and clap before you tell everyone who that's by.
5th was Darklands - the Jesus and Mary Chain.
Can't recall chronology after that.
I've always had an eclectic taste. -

Re: First Album bought?

Re: First Album bought?
Mon, June 9, 2008 - 6:36 AMColumbia house! HAha...I musta had three or four accounts with those guys.
I wonder how they ever made any money?
They've been around forever.
I have no idea who or what the Spring Sessions are.
My first CD, though, was a New Order peel session.
Bought at the PX from Randolph Air Force base.
Funny how the Bases I went to as a kid
had pretty good music selections.
I grew up listening to obscure albums and thinking
they were the average output.
