current retro song obsession

topic posted Sat, June 21, 2008 - 1:06 AM by  Saul
so yeah, every so often I get obsessed with an old track. I listen to a lot of older music for pleasure and also for sampling.

my current favorite song right now is "Fairchild" by Willie West. DAMN! so good. I didn't find a record, but it was on LB's bday gift to me (seriously, go get this - www.amazon.com/What-Funky...pd_bbs_sr_1 ) now I am hunting down an LP comp that has the track so I can do a routine with it!

I couldn't find a site that plays it straight off the bat - you can listen to the chorus at amazon, but that is far from the song's most compelling moment.

      I did not know that!

damn, now it's too late to play records - I have a couple Rose Royce albums sitting in my crate that I never got around to listening to. I found them the other day in the back of one of my crates with the first Salsoul 12"

when you start ripping stuff remember your bruh t-bird...
"in full bloom" & "strikes again" are both pretty tight. i have crappy d/l's of tunes from those. bought "car wash" the other day--gotta have the original cd, that's too important to leave to chance.
there's some other heaters too from other albums.

*listening to Full Bloom right now - Strikes Again is next up - those were the two I have on vinyl*

I think in the next few months I'm gonna buy Serato and I'll probably rip a shitload of tracks for it :) mi musica es tu musica

I think I like Strikes Again better than In Full Bloom

funny how the 3rd album might be better than the 2nd (based on the assumption of the rock cliche of 1st being best and it being downhill from there...)

Sometimes you break big then get a chance to do
what you were *really* all about.
                Radiohead.
                The Kinks
                The Beatles

the best example is radiohead from your list.

the kinks first single that went anywhere was "you really got me" which was a tune the band was excited about, but that the record company really didn't even want to put out (according to ray davies' "storytellers" cd.)

although i prefer the later druggy music, i think the early poppy stuff was just as "real" for the beatles as the abstract stuff later--listen to the music they made after the group broke up, it seems to often refer to the early stuff stylistically.

                    Hmmm. I guess.
I put my foot in my mouth talking about what
                    (the musicains) are 'really about'.

That's not a very useful term.

I always think of the middle/later works
when I hear the names of those bands though.

                    Kinks-Village Green / Arthur
                    Beatles-Sgt Pepper's
                    Radiohead-Ok Computer

And also how many of the older artists were demanded to play whatever
was hot at the time, as opposed to their own creations, on their first few albums.
(long tall shorty, roadrunner, roll over beethoven, twist and shout etc)

Lennon's solo stuff sure didn't sound much like early Beatles.
Neither did George's...well. wait a minute, I take that back.
'I Got My Mind Set On You" is pretty damn poppy now that I think of it.

" Harrison's cover of Rudy Clark's obscure early 1960s song "Got My Mind Set on You", (which Harrison had wanted to record with the Beatles in the early days) accompanied by a humorous video, was released and stunned everyone by reaching #1 in the US and #2 in the UK — heights Harrison had not achieved in almost fifteen years. "

So maybe we can chalk that up to the earlier observation that bands
and artists tend to become more watered down and flat as they age and, in this case,as he was trying to get some recognition as an artist again he reached into his first brush with fame for that.

                    I don't know.
                    It's an interesting topic, though.

The life cycle of a musician and his 'muse' as
filtered through public opinion and consumption.

Or something, what's this thread about again?

I have been focusing on Soul for so long, it is hard to see music completely apart from race relations.

the industry's machinations, even with a "pure" form such as Soul are so tainted with exploitation, it's disgusting.

I still feel that MY (ethnic) people are viewed as "niggers" by the entertainment media, and maybe society in general.

I think all this shit is divisive.

is it okay for us to be the "niggers" you look down on because we toil the fields, pick your vegetables and clean your fucking toilet?

is it somehow different because we are brown and not black??

just like black people are not silly watermelon eating minstrels, we are not mariachi julio iglesias salsa clowns who are happy shitting out a million babies and singing "La Cucaracha" at your frat party while wearing our hats backwards.

my anger at white appropriation is tempered by the fact that I'm half white.

                      vaya con diablo

the beatles actually LIKED that stuff. one of the happiest days of john lennon's life was when he got to share a stage w/chuck berry--who preceded to (accidentally) bash john in the head with his guitar. <---i think that's documented in "hail hail rock & roll" (chuck berry film.)

<Lennon's solo stuff sure didn't sound much like early Beatles. >

maybe not with yoko, but "double fantasy" sure hearkens back to the old days...

      >>>maybe not with yoko, but "double fantasy" sure hearkens back to the old days... <<<

      what?

You realize that Double Fantasy was a work he did with Yoko Ono, right?
I mean 'Kiss Kiss Kiss' shows the beginnings of New Wave, for friths sake.

Perhaps you're refering to Starting Over which was his 'Elvis/Orbison' number...
but he called it that derisively and only because he was mimicing the voices.

Lyrically the most similar song on the album is still light years away from
'I Wanna Hold Your Hand',"I Saw Her Standing There","Please Please Me"
"Love Me Do","Do You Want to Know a Secret","And I Love Her" or
      "Can't Buy Me Love"

or any other pop songs of the early beatles.

      Seriously, compare the two lyrics:

      Love, love me do.
      You know I love you,
      I’ll always be true,
      So please, love me do.
      Whoa, love me do.

      Love, love me do.
      You know I love you,
      I’ll always be true,
      So please, love me do.
      Whoa, love me do.

      Someone to love,
      Somebody new.
      Someone to love,
      Someone like you.

      Love, love me do.
      You know I love you,
      I’ll always be true,
      So please, love me do.
      Whoa, love me do.

      Love, love me do.
      You know I love you,
      I’ll always be true,
      So please, love me do.
      Whoa, love me do.
      Yeah, love me do.
      Whoa, oh, love me do.

to Starting Over (Feels Like) which isn't crazy complicated but by comparison
      seems positively labyrinthian:

Our life together is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love is still special
Let's take a chance and fly away somewhere alone

It's been too long since we took the time
No-one's to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It's like we both are falling in love again
It'll be just like starting over, starting over

Everyday we used to make it love
Why can't we be making love nice and easy
It's time to spread our wings and fly
Don't let another day go by my love
It'll be just like starting over, starting over

Why don't we take off alone
Take a trip somewhere far, far away
We'll be together all alone again
Like we used to in the early days
      Well, well, well darling

It's been too long since we took the time
No-one's to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It's like we both are falling in love again
It'll be just like starting over, starting over

Our life together is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love is still special
Let's take a chance and fly away somewhere

<You realize that Double Fantasy was a work he did with Yoko Ono, right?>

his name is on the marquee as opposed to "plastic ono band."

<I mean 'Kiss Kiss Kiss' shows the beginnings of New Wave, for friths sake.>

i think the cars, blondie, elvis costello and countless others who came out with records in '77 would beg to differ.

<Lyrically the most similar song on the album is still light years away from

after reading them, honestly it just sounds like the speaker married his gf and is writing 20 years later. i don't see the "light years" although it is slightly more mature.
