...but have lost that certain ( ethereal ) something over time.

Of course this is a subjective discussion.
Kinda segues with another thread.

Feel free to add your two cents.

  • well of course they have, they're all too busy worrying about their share options and whether their children Jemima, Fudgetunnel and Moontrumpet will go a tad awry when they get to pub going age
    • kids going awry isn't part of the publicity plan?
      • in lieu of compelling music craft
        • i like to think of it as timely publicity...

          ...sometimes the music doesn't suck.
          • David Bowie...(I love his early hippy stuff all the way up to Hunky Dory really.)
New Order's first two or three were pretty 'raw'.
            • hhmmm Black Sabbath ..?
              • Ah, the center-of-the-web band for all of Heavy Metal.
                I concur.

                hmmm..Madonna?
                or that one too easy?
                • If we're going in that direction, then I can think of no one who jumped so far down from the awesome-tree onto the suck-train than Cher. I mean: holy shit.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
as far as recorded output, as I go thru records at work I get to see (hear) the decline of black female singers as the albums get shittier as the years progress... (I accept that some of these chicks might have turned it around at some point after I stopped listening)

                    Gladys Knight
                    Diana Ross
                    Aretha Franklin
                    Tina Turner
                    Chaka Khan

                    etc.

the 80's really did a number on those soul chicks (although okay, I do like "I Feel For You").
                    • Wow, interesting.
Six more back catalogues to explore!
Can you guys suggest some albums
                      to start out with?

                      Hmm...
I *would* say Millie Jackson, but she never effectively
reached that 'really good' status for me. More of a bawdy novelty.
Dolly Parton? The Bargain Store? Mule Skinner's Blues
I dunno seems like i'm getting kinda campy...

Hm...I just heard a Traffic album that was amazing!
                    • i think there was a mixed bag of stuff from the "divas."

part of it is probably that someone else was generally producing their music looking for "hits."

gladys... i think if she worked with the right person there's still a lot of potential there--it's not like her voice went to pot, just the tunes.
diana... never thought she had much skillwize, but "diana" (produced by nile rogers) was pretty good--mostly about the tunes, not the vox.
aretha... see gladys, but add "who's zoomin' who" for at least a couple singles (the title cut, "freeway of love" and ?)
tina... her cover of "i can't stand the rain" is cool (i still prefer the original) but i have to say imo her best work was with ike.
chaka... yes, her best work is really with rufus but... that's like saying coltrane's best work was with miles--there's so much OTHER stuff that is great. i don't think chaka fell off till the 90s when she had lousy soul stuff on offer and TERRIBLE house guest shots. i wish i could afford to work with her.

                      recommendations for ben:

gladys knight & the pips from the 70s (titles on buddha are preferable to motown, but most of it is good.)
diana ross, my opinion is "diana" is the best thing she ever did. if you like "girl groups" you might want to check out the supremes.
aretha... most things on atlantic are good. i'm a fan of gospel so i recommend "amazing grace" (a live recording) but i'm biased.
tina... best of ike & tina (best selection for a beginner.)
chaka... definitely get the stuff w/rufus (i.e., rufus feat. chaka khan--they did a couple of records w/o her.) but i also like some of her solo stuff from the 80s.
                      • Got another one for the fire.

                        Michael Franti.

Is it just me or was the first Spearhead
album better that anything else he's put out.

I really tried to like his stuff, out of respect for the master
...(I did the same thing with Siouxsie and her last three albums as well)
...to no avail...I just can't pull it off.
                        It's too...I dunno...happy?
                        Saccharin?

                        Anyone?
                        • "home" is EXCELLENT. from there you go backwards-->disposable heroes of hiphoprisy > beatnigs

my wife LOVES franti, but is starting to maybe get bored with his new stuff... we all love what he's SAYING, but i could say the same about a lot of bob dylan...

michael franti needs to discover that there is life after roots reggae. he's doing that thing i call "sf reggae" where they get the particular elements of reggae right (basic beat, skank) but they miss the point (GROOOVE.) it's singer-songwriter stuff with a reggae template.

to be fair, it isn't exclusive to the bay area--there are just many offenders there.
